El Portal is a village in Miami-Dade County, just a few minutes south of downtown Miami. The community has a rich history and many examples of architecture from the 1930s. Historical Facts for Renters

  • The village's name came from the Spanish term for "wooden gate," reflecting the gate that once stood at the community's entry. 
  • An Indian mound in El Portal was the first archeological site in the county to receive historic recognition. It was created as a burial spot in the year 600 by the Tequesta Indians. The mound is located in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. 
  • During the 1920s, El Portal was annexed into the City of Miami. However, the city gave up its jurisdiction during the Great Depression, and the area became an independent village. 
  • Three communities, Sherwood Forest, El Jardines and El Portal, united to found the village in 1937. The founders wanted to create an area similar to Coral Gables, however, El Portal has remained more rural than the bigger city.
  • El Portal is a bird sanctuary and home to a number of exotic species, including wild peacocks. There's a nature trail through the village where residents can spot the local wildlife.
